Crossroads Comedy Theater’s growing catalog of online comedy arts courses are not pre-recorded, one-size-fits-all videos. Our 6 week courses are taught by real, live humans who actually do the comedy art they are teaching. They will work with you to make sure you understand the material and improve throughout the course.
We know not everyone can make it to one of our in-person classes in Philadelphia or Indianapolis, so let us come to you! Learn something new, expand your friend circle, and have a great time doing it.
Whether it’s improv, stand-up comedy, comedy writing, storytelling, acting, or any of our other amazing online courses – we got your back!
All our classes run live via Zoom. This means your instructor is right there with you for questions, clarity, feedback, praise, etc all in the moment. You can also email with them in between classes.
Skills learned in our classes go beyond the stage and page. Improve communication, build self-confidence, embrace collaboration, be more positive, think faster on you feet, and so much more! Great skills for sales people, teachers, lawers, etc.
In an online class you will meet people from all over and possibly make some new friends in your neck of the woods. Many people that take our classes become great friends no matter where they are based.
Stop doom scrolling! We get lots of people just looking to disconnect from the worries of the world for two hours each week. A place where they can let go, play, and have fun. With an online class you can do exactly that - from home.
There is no experience necessary to take any of our beginner courses - you don't even need a desire to perform.

We are excited to now offer Crossroads Comedy Theater E-Gift cards! Now you can give the gift one of our amazing classes or shows to someone you love at any time!
It’s true these are “comedy” classes, but the skills you or your loved one will learn go beyond the stage and page. We’re biased, but we do believe our classes make great gifts. In addition to meeting new people and having fun, our students have also: improved communication, increased self-confidence, become more positive thinkers, explored their creative sides, made new friends, embraced collaboration, and so much more.
Below are a bunch of frequently asked questions we receive for prospective students as well as current students. If you have a question that you do not see addressed here you can email us at classes@xroadscomedy.com and we will help you out.
Since we do not yet have our own space, our in-person classes are held at various locations in Philly with some classes taking place online. Please be sure to check the location on the individual class page, currently listed at the bottom, for the exact location of your class. This information will also be included in a reminder email that will be sent to students the day before an upcoming course begins.
Our online classes are held through the magic of the internet via Zoom. These classes currently include options in Comedy Writing and Stand-up, potentially with more to come. These courses actually work very well online.
Crossroads Philly currently has 4 main programs: Longform Improv, Musical Improv, Sketch Comedy Writing, Stand-up Comedy, and Storytelling. We also offer a variety of electives the supplement each program. Our full Course Catalog also includes special classes offered by local, regional, and national instructors that cover topics such as Dramatic Improv, Clowning, Pilot Writing, and so much more.
This really depends on what you are looking to do! As we say throughout our site, the lessons learned in our courses go beyond the class to help improve and influence your everyday life and work. If you are looking to think faster on your feet, learn to be more adaptable and be open to collaboration, improve your listening and communication skills, and/or build confidence in front of groups in a course with no real homework – then we suggest our Improv 1 course.
If you are looking to do some writing and explore your creative side and how funny you really are or can be – then Comedy Writing or stand-up is the way to go. Both of these options do have some light homework attached, but that’s how you get better!
We do not allow anyone to audit any of our 6 or 8 week classes, however; we do offer periodic basics classes in improv, stand-up, and comedy writing that you can register for. These one day, two hour workshops give students a great idea of what to expect in a full course. They also stand on their own as you will learn something new, meet people, and have a blast with the guidance of one of Philly’s best instructors.
We accept all major credit cards through our ticket and enrollment partner site, Crowd Work. We also now offer payment plans. More info on those in the next question.
Yes we do! We are happy to say that we now offer payment plans right at checkout. Just look for the “pay with a payment plan” checkbox. Our two main payment plan options include:
With both options you are required to create an account and keep your card on file so your card can be charged on specified dates. Please note that payment plans currently include processing fees of $1 for our ticketing platform and 2.9% + $0.30 for Square per transaction.
Depending on when you enroll, not all options will be available as we need payment in full before class begins. If you don’t see a payment schedule that suits your needs, please email classes@xroadscomedy.com to request an invoice. This will allow you to use AfterPay to enroll using the 4 payments over 6 weeks schedule.
Crossroads runs occasional sales on some or all courses. We know that no one likes paying for something and then seeing it advertised at a lower price. For that reason we have the Crossroads Price Match Guarantee. If you see your class advertised at a lower price, email us at classes@xroadscomedy.com while the sale is still active and we will refund the difference!
We understand that there are options other than Crossroads and your training there may be comparable in content to what you would learn in one of our courses. For that reason, we do allow the limited leap frogging of prerequisites in our programs with permission.
You can skip Improv 1, Sketch Writing 1, or Stand-up 1 at Crossroads if you have taken courses through another reputable training location (Crossroads Indy, iO Theater, Helium Comedy, ComedySportz, The Second City, The Annoyance, etc). In some cases, courses you have taken in college can also count. Please email classes@xroadscomedy.com – before you enroll – detailing your experience and we will let you know if you qualify to skip a prerequisite.
We typically do not allow students to leapfrog any level out than Improv 2 with rare exceptions. This is because we want to make sure we are all working form the same material and skillset.
Though we suggest students wait for a course in which they can make all the classes, we do allow students to enroll that may have to miss for any reason. It’s no replacement for actually being in class, but some instructors do offer a recap of the class along with takeaways for the week. See the next question for our attendance policy. There are no prorated discounts if you enroll knowing you are going to miss any classes.
We totally understand that life happens and things can come up that cause you to miss class or run late. That said, we do track attendance and punctuality and take both seriously. Repeated absences or lateness put you at a disadvantage in class and can disrupt the growth of others.
For 8-week core program courses, students are allowed to miss up to 2 classes and still meet the attendance requirement. For courses running six weeks or less, attendance is handled on a case-by-case basis. Because shorter courses are typically front-loaded with foundational skills, we don’t recommend missing any classes, especially the first one. In all cases, the specific classes you miss, along with your overall progress in the course, may affect whether you perform in the class show and/or advance through our program.
If you miss more than the allowed number of classes or are consistently late, outcomes may include not performing in the class show, not advancing through our program, or being removed from the course. Removal from a course due to absences or repeated lateness does not qualify for a refund.
Our goal is to be flexible while still making sure everyone has a strong experience and is set up for success. If two or more of the same course are happening concurrently, make-up options will be opened up.
All Crossroads Comedy Theater class sales are final. Please carefully consider your schedule and travel before enrolling. In some cases students may defer their enrollment to one of the following two class sessions. Deferment after the start of the course is not permitted. Any questions about this policy can be emailed to classes@xroadscomedy.com. Policy updated March 2024.
If we cancel a course for any reason, you will be given the option of getting a credit for a future class or receiving a refund to your original form of payment. Refunds can take anywhere from 3-10 business days to receive.
Classes and shows run as scheduled whenever it is safe to do so. The safety of our students, instructors, and staff is our top priority. In the event of severe weather or other unsafe travel conditions, Crossroads may cancel a class, delay a class, or move a class online. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we work to balance consistency, safety, and the quality of your experience.
Decisions are based on local forecasts, venue conditions, and general travel safety. If a class is affected by weather or related conditions, updates will be communicated to enrolled students as soon as possible via email, text, and social media.
When a schedule change occurs, make-up plans will be communicated as soon as possible. In some cases, this may take a few days due to venue availability and scheduling logistics. When feasible, our preferred approach is to add an additional week to the end of the course so students receive the full instructional experience. If that is not possible, an alternative plan will be determined. Depending on availability, students may be offered the option to attend a make-up class in another section or receive a class credit equal to the value of the missed session. All make-up decisions are made by Crossroads and shared with enrolled students. While we aim to choose an option that works for as many people as possible, attendance at make-up sessions cannot be guaranteed for every schedule.
In all situations, we encourage students to make the decision that best supports their safety. If weather before or after class makes travel unsafe, choosing not to attend is completely acceptable. Students may miss up to two classes in an eight-week course and still satisfy the attendance requirement.
Cancellations or schedule changes due to weather or other circumstances beyond our control do not automatically qualify for refunds. We will make reasonable efforts to complete the course through rescheduling, make-up sessions, or alternative instructional solutions. Class credits are not refunds, have no cash value, and may be subject to expiration or other reasonable limitations.
If an instructor experiences an unexpected issue and is unable to attend class, Crossroads will make every reasonable effort to secure a substitute before canceling or delaying the session. If a substitute cannot be secured, we will follow the same communication and make-up planning process outlined above.
Unfortunately, no. We do not allow anyone other than enrolled students to attend our classes. This is a theater policy and is not the call of any individual instructors. This is for the safety and trust of all our students as well as keeping our class size manageable for the spaces that we use.
We make an effort to record all class graduation shows, but this is not a guarantee. If your class show was recorded we will edit, encode, and upload the video to an unlisted YouTube link, which we will then share with the class. This is a time consuming process, but we aim to have links out within a month following the performance. Delays may occur. If you would like to check the status of your class show recording you can email us at classes@xroadscomedy.com.
We do! In addition to the class performance that happens at the end of some of our core program courses, we have the Improv Jam that happens when we have a performance run. Students can get up and play with more seasoned performers and get some stage time, practicing what they learned in class. We also regularly invite students from our education programs to perform in some of our productions as well as submit their writing for inclusion in shows.
