OUR BIO

Now one of Philly’s longer running comedy shows, Study Hall combines lectures and laughs in one fantastic hour never seen before and never to be seen again! Drexel University’s Professor Michael Yudell and guests from all over lecture on a wide variety of topics and the amazingly talented cast warps each lecture into hilarious scenes on the spot!

Study Hall was formed in 2011 as part of the Philadelphia Science Festival. In that show, Philly Improv Theater House Team “Asteroid!” was paired with Drexel University’s Professor Michael Yudell. The segment featured Professor Yudell giving short lectures from the world of public health and Asteroid! improvising scenes inspired by them. The segment was a hit and was featured in 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Screencap from one of the many "Study Hall: Distance Learning Edition" shows we did during the pandemic.

Study Hall in its current form was created by former Philly Improv Theater team “Asteroid!” for the 2013 Philly Fringe Festival again paired with Professor Michael Yudell. After Asteroid! ended in October 2013, the show was picked up by PHIT to be a monthly show and ran that way up until the covid-19 pandemic shut down the theater in March 2020.

With live theater no longer an option for us, we adapted the show’s format to the Zoom age and moved to the internet. Study Hall has performed dozens of online shows since. The digital format has allowed us to welcome guest performers and lecturers from around the world in a way the live show did not all while keeping everyone safe.

Study Hall been back live and safe on stage since June of 2021. We perform around town, typically at Plays & Players Theatre or Theatre Exile, but you can also catch us at such prestigious organizations as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and other great institutions throughout the year.
