We also welcome guest instructors from Philly’s thriving arts scene and beyond to offer courses that supplement our core programs to strengthen the skills and stretch the muscles of our students.

At Crossroads you can study a variety of disciplines, because we believe that learning one art can both supplement and complement the skills you gain from another. Improv can help you think faster on your feet as a stand-up comedian or allow you to approach writing from a new direction, comedy writing can strengthen your skills as a stand-up and help you think more narratively on the fly in an improv scene, and so on. Studying with Crossroads Comedy Theater can help you become the best, most well rounded improviser, writer, stand-up, or hobbyist that you can be.

We can help you improve communication skills, build self-confidence, embrace collaboration, be more positive, think faster on your feet, break out of your shell, meet new people, and have more fun!

For those that are in this for performance opportunities, know that many from our education programs have gone on to perform in or write for shows with Crossroads as well as with other theatre companies and groups/teams around town. Our students are regulars at area auditions and stand-outs in the process. They have brightened the stages of area theaters by using the skills they’ve learned in our classes to be cast on a wide variety of teams and productions.

MUSICAL IMPROV

Our Musical Improv program is the most comprehensive in the area so far. We have a four course program which guides you all the way from improvising your first line to improvising a full, hour long musical with your class. Our instructors are very experienced and have been involved in musical improv in Philly for many years. We are also lucky to have very experienced musical accompanists lead our classes.

Students are able to jump into our Musical Improv program after they have completed at least one improv course with Crossroads or have special permission. After that you can run straight through the program. The more skills you have as a traditional improviser, the better a musical improviser you will be. So though you do not need to complete the longform improv program, doing so will certainly strengthen your skills.

STUDENT FAQ

Below are a bunch of frequently asked questions we receive for prospective students as well as current students. If you have a question that you do not see addressed here you can email us at classes@xroadscomedy.com and we will help you out.

In person and Online via Zoom.

In person Crossroads classes are currently held at various spaces in Philly. Please be sure to check the location on the individual class page, currently listed at the bottom, for the exact location of your class. This information will also be included in a reminder email that will be sent to students the day before an upcoming course begins. Locations which we use most frequently include Philly Dance Fitness in Center City Philly and Sawubona Creativity Project in South Philly.

Our online classes are held through the magic of the internet via Zoom. These classes currently include options in Comedy Writing and Stand-up, potentially with more to come.

Crossroads Philly currently has 4 main programs: Improv, Musical Improv, Comedy Writing, and Stand-up and a variety of electives the supplement each program. Our full Course Catalog also includes special classes offered by local, regional, and national instructors that cover topics such as Dramatic Improv, Clowning, Pilot Writing, and more.

This really depends on what you are looking to do. As we say throughout our site, the lessons learned in our courses go beyond the class to help improve and influence your everyday life and work. If you are looking to think faster on your feet, learn to be more adaptable and be open to collaboration, improve your listening and communication skills, and/or build confidence in front of groups in a course with no real homework - then we suggest our Improv 1 course.

If you are looking to do some writing and explore your creative side and how funny you really are or can be - then Comedy Writing or stand-up is the way to go. Both of these options do have some light homework attached, but that's how you get better!

We do not allow anyone to audit any of our 6 or 8 week classes, however; we do offer periodic intro classes in improv, stand-up, and comedy writing that you can register for. There are no auditing opportunities for classes beyond the intro level.

We accept all major credit cards through our ticket and enrollment partner site, Fourth Wall Tickets. We have expanded options if students pay via invoice including Google Pay, and AfterPay. AfterPay is a digital payment platform offered to our students that allows them to delay payments on purchases. Students can make enroll in a class right away and then pay for the class in 4 interest free installments over 6 weeks.

Yes we do! Our main option is AfterPay. AfterPay is a digital payment platform offered to our students that allows them to delay payments on purchases. Students can enroll in a class right away and then pay for the class in 4 interest free installments over 6 weeks. To take advantage of this option you will need to email classes@xroadscomedy.com with the name of the course you are looking to enroll in. We will then send you an invoice for the class which will have AfterPay as a payment option. Make your payment and you're all set.

Congrats on taking that first step! We are so very excited to have you. Right now you are all set. Within a few days (depending on when you enrolled) you will receive a registration email from our Education Coordinator. You should fill out this registration form as soon as possible. This email will also contain all the important information about your class including location, dates, time, etc with a link to the original class page on which you enrolled.

Once you have completed your registration form you are fully enrolled. You will not hear form the Education Center again until the day before class with a reminder email. If you have any questions about your class you can refer back to our registration email or feel free to reach out to us at classes@xroadscomedy.com.

Crossroads runs occasional sales on some or all courses. We know that no one likes paying for something and then seeing it advertised at a lower price. For that reason we have the Crossroads Price Match Guarantee. If you see your class advertised at a lower price, email us at classes@xroadscomedy.com while the sale is still active and we will refund the difference!

You can skip Improv 1 at Crossroads if you have taken courses through another reputable training location (Crossroads Indy, iO Theater, ComedySportz, The Second City, The Annoyance, etc). In some cases, courses you have taken in college can also count. We list the prerequisite for courses in each description. If you are unsure if you meet our listed prerequisites, email your question to classes@xroadscomedy.com, detail your experience, and we will let you know before you enroll.

Though we suggest students wait for a course in which they can make all the classes, we do allow students to enroll that may have to miss for any reason. It's no replacement for actually being in class, but we do offer a recap of the class along with takeaways for the week. See the next question for our attendance policy.

We understand that things come up that can impact schedules and cause students to be late or miss a class. For this reason we permit students to have two excused absences without impacting their enrollment. If a student misses more than two classes they may limit their ability to participate in some exercises or the class performance, risk failing the course, or potentially be asked not to return to class. Lateness is left to the discretion of the instructor and will be dealt with on a case by case basis depending on the disruption to the class. Our classes take place in Center City and South Philly, both very busy areas. We highly suggest students do what they need to do to be at class on time.

If your schedule changes and you find that you will miss more time than you expected and it is at least a week out from class we can either refund or transfer you to another section or future course. In some cases we may be able to offer a transfer inside of one week. There are no refunds or transfers after a course has started.

In the event of severe weather, it is possible that classes could be disrupted. Our general rule is that if SEPTA is running then classes are on as scheduled. If we do cancel a class, for any reason, we will email students with as much notice as possible and will typically err on the side of caution. In the days that follow we will be in touch with how this cancelation impacts the schedule for rest of the course. At this time we do not switch to online courses in the event of cancellations of in-person classes, but it is something we are considering for the future.

We know that some students travel from outside the city. If severe weather hits your area hard, and class is still occurring as scheduled, please put your safety first and exercise caution traveling to class. Absences due to severe weather will be excused and not counted against you according or our attendance policy hindering your ability to advance through our program (though other factors would still apply). Students that miss due to extreme weather will have the option of reaching out to the Education Coordinator for tips gathered from the curriculum and instructor to try and keep them up to speed for the next class.  In the event there are two of the same course happening during the same session, a student may request to make-up the class they missed so long as the make-up class happens after the absence. At this time we cannot offer make-up classes that extend beyond a single session.

Unfortunately, no. We do not allow anyone other than enrolled students to attend our classes. This is a theater policy and is not the call of any individual instructors. This is for the safety and trust of all our students as well as keeping our class size manageable for the spaces that we use.

We make an effort to record all class graduation shows, but this is not a guarantee. If your class show was recorded we will edit, encode, and upload the video to an unlisted YouTube link, which we will then share with the class. This is a time consuming process, but we aim to have links out within a month following the performance. Delays may occur. If you would like to check the status of your class show recording you can email us at classes@xroadscomedy.com.

We do! In addition to the class performance that happens at the end of some of our core program courses, we have the Improv Jam that happens when we have a performance run. Students can get up and play with more seasoned performers and get some stage time, practicing what they learned in class. We also regularly invite students from our education programs to perform in some of our productions as well as submit their writing for inclusion in shows.

You can reach out to us at classes@xroadscomedy.com or call/text us at 215-650-7360.

We understand that things up and schedules change and sometimes with little notice. For this reason do allow students to transfer to a different section of a course or a different course entirely within the same session. Please note that we will be implementing a Transfer Fee of $20 beginning in December 2023. When we receive your request we will email you a link to make payment. Once payment is made we will proceed with the backend work of completing your transfer.

If the new class is priced higher then students will be sent an invoice that includes the price difference plus the transfer fee. If the new class is priced lower, students will be sent a refund of the difference minus the transfer fee.
